Agile Pontoon Fishing Craft Will Get You Rocking!

Fishing pontoons have had a good run since they became something of a phenomenon back in the 90's, and they're still going strong, with many excellent craft available for your still water fishing expeditions.

And they don't have to cost an arm and a leg either! Even brand new you can get an excellent 8-footer with many handy features and a comfortable seat for only a couple of hundred dollars.

So what's the big fuss about these agile-looking craft?

Well, for a start, they are very, er... agile little fishing craft! This is largely thanks to the the particular rocker-shape of the pontoons. Other than, say catarafts, pontoon boats have less of the tube in the water per foot of tube - and therefore less resistance.

Less resistance means it becomes possible to turn in very tight circles, always getting you in the best spot for the action going on below! This maneuverability also helps you to easily navigate the river runs you'll be making from hole to hole.

And of course, sitting comfortably in your high seat gives you an excellent view of your surroundings and where you're heading.

Where can you go in your fishing pontoon?

These craft are primarily aimed at still water, inland lake and slow-moving river use. You will definitely want to avoid whitewater situations! Even the larger, more stable 12 footers are not designed with the stability needed for fast-water rafting. For that you will need to look at catarafts and the like!

And when it comes to getting to the river and back, most of these craft can be loaded and transported with ease on your rooftop or in a pickup or SUV.

So if you're aiming for some quiet, sit-down fishing on your own or with a buddy - and you don't want to break the bank - a fishing pontoon is definitely an option to look into!

If a USA flagged sailing yacht pulls into port in another country that is more restrictive in its firearms laws, the USA yacht is required to declare firearms and ammunition. I saw this in most countries in the CRUISING WIKI section. No problem, right? Some nations require that the firearms be impounded and given back upon departure. Have there been instances of firearms being "lost" by the authorities, or have authorities objected to certain firearms (.50cal, H&K UMP, suppressors, laser sights, frangible ammo) that are legal in the USA (for now), but are just too scary for some governments?

Jet skis are personal watercrafts that will sure leave you hurling for more in open waters. However, to be able to make the most out from them (besides their tag prices are so high that you must really get the deal from your precious vehicle), you have to know what keeps it in good working condition.

Other jet ski parts aside, jet ski engines are probably the most important part of the whole machine. It drives the watercraft, it gives the power. Depending on the condition, they provide the performance and create the envying waves. Well, in fact jet ski engines are the ones that will keep the machine running.

In fact, when your buying for a jet ski especially those that are sold second hand, the looks wont say it all. It is always the engine that would spell the difference. In fact, the more the scratches while the engine is working on its optimum power, the better the deal. The engine therefore, gives the life for the vehicle.

The whole PWC is useless when it's not working right? Well, maintenance for your jet ski engine does not entail demanding routines. As a sample, it would be good to note that the engine, for it to work properly must always be supplied with enough oil. (that isn't hard right?)

Oil provides the lubrication. This is vital since once the jet ski engine lacks oil, fusing of parts would be possible.

Another thing, flush water from your engine regularly. Lake water may do but algae and dirt normally cause buildup in the engine parts which may eventually cause the decline in performance of the machine. If you are using your jet ski in salt water however, you have to assure to it that salt water is flushed before storing it.

Salt, once it builds up can actually cause you serious problems. These are quite hard to remove and you have no other option but to painstakingly remove them by means other than using hot water (one of the most effective medium for removing salt deposits. After all, you can never use hot water in cleaning a cooling system.

You need also to have a close watch on the impeller. Minerals, dirt, weeds and algae can all get deposited in the impeller which in the end, will drop down the performing capacity of your jet ski. Remember to clear these once you get out from water.

Other than these jet ski engine tips, please check for the specific engine maintenance as stipulated in your PWC manual.

In a jetboat, the waterjet draws water from beneath the hull where it passes through a series of impellers and stators - known as stages - which increase the velocity of the waterflow. Most modern jets are single stage while older waterjets may have as many as three stages. The tail section of the waterjet unit extends out through the transom of the hull above the waterline. This jetstream exits the unit through a small nozzle at high velocity to push the boat forward. Steering is accomplished by moving this nozzle to either side, or less commonly, by small gates on either side that direct the jetstream. Because the jet boat relies on the flow of water through the nozzle for control, it is not possible to steer a conventional jet boat without the throttle open.

Hi, just a quick question - I've been looking for navigation software and found there is lots of it for sailing yachts. I came across a program called Software on Board that runs C Maps. So, I was just wondering if anyone has this and can tell me what it's like. Can anyone tell me what type of GPS antenna would be best (an internal or an external)? My boat is aluminium and I'm not sure how the signal would go through aluminium, and, is the accuracy of these units as good as each other?

Anti Theft Jet Ski Trailer

A jet ski doesn�t run on land. That is why, in order for you to bring it to the waters where it belongs, you should have a tool to transport it. You must need a jet ski trailer. But transporting you jet ski is one thing. Protecting it from thieves is another. And the first line of defense you can do in order to avoid it is to make sure that your trailer is safe and secured.

If you cannot transport your jet ski without a trailer, no one could. So it is important to keep your trailer secured as well.

Here�s how:

Strap your jet ski to the trailer securely. This is important because if the jet ski is secured to the trailer, any attempt to remove it will not work. Make sure that you provide the thief a major task. In other words, you give the thief too much work that can cause too much noise and draws too much attention so that they will be forced to find an easier prey.

If staying at the garage, make sure that the trailer could not be moved in any way possible. Remember that a truck and haul your trailer easily so make sure that there is no possibility that that trailer can be moved. You can consider removing the wheels of the trailer during long off-season period.

Never in any circumstance leave the jet ski and jet ski trailer unattended while outside. Though it can be secured on a certain location, it would be very advisable to keep an eye on them at all times. If you are staying at a hotel, have it parked securely or have a hotel attendant to man your jet ski. Keep it covered so that the risk is lessened. If parked on an open space, install a trailer anti-theft wheel lock so that no one can move your trailer while you are away.

Make sure you invest on a good chain. You can chain it secured during the day or dock it to an immovable place.

A waterproof battery disconnect switch could prevent theft from staring your jet ski. You can purchase one and you can assure yourself that no one can ever start your jet ski.

With a little price to pay for the stuff you need to buy and time you need to spend, you can spare one of your priced possessions from going away from you.

Most modern monohull boats have fin keels, which are heavy and deep, but short in relation to the hull length. More traditional yachts carried a full keel which is generally half or more of the length of the boat. A recent feature is a winged keel, which is short and shallow, but carries a lot of weight in two "wings" which run sideways from the main part of the keel. Even more recent is the concept of canting keels, designed to move the weight at the bottom of a sailboat to the upwind side, allowing the boat to carry more sails.

Models have an inboard engine driving a pump jet that has a screw-shaped impeller to create thrust for propulsion and steering. If a USA flagged sailing yacht pulls into port in another country that is more restrictive in its firearms laws, the USA yacht is required to declare firearms and ammunition. I saw this in most countries in the CRUISING WIKI section. No problem, right? Some nations require that the firearms be impounded and given back upon departure. Have there been instances of firearms being "lost" by the authorities, or have authorities objected to certain firearms (.50cal, H&K UMP, suppressors, laser sights, frangible ammo) that are legal in the USA (for now), but are just too scary for some governments?

Taking good care of your boat is very essential too. Good maintenance and care would enhance the life span of your boat and moreover will save you a lot of money from repairs. One of the most important boat accessories to maintain your boat is a boat cover.

We don�t use out boat daily, which means most of the time it is idling either on a dock or in your garage. At present there are few places where a common man can be master and leader of his own fate, but a boat is one of them. But possessing a boat is not without peril or cost. Boat insurance is necessary for shielding such an expensive asset.

The two chief aspects of boat insurance are legal responsibility, or security and insurance; and property loss. In some respects, they are managed the same way as automobile or home policies.

This is the extra-costly alternative to cover a boat.

An authentic cash value policy indicates that if a boat is a complete loss, one will obtain the existing market price, not including the deductible, and suitable reduction for the age and state of the boat during loss.

Boat wraps are printed out before they are installed on your boat so if you see something you don't' like or it doesn't meet your vision, you can change it before its put on your boat. You can't do that with airbrush.

So whether you are an avid fisherman, a boat racer, or a boater hobbyist having a boat that is different from everyone else's is more of a reality than you thought possible with boat wraps.

Tropical Depression Four (TD 4 ) a storm in the Atlantic - this was designated late this morning. It's moving to the west, and I expect this motion to continue for the next 72 hours. I feel the NHC has a good track forecast right now, based on what I've seen in the forecast steering currents as mentioned this morning. This could change as this reaches T.S. or Hurricane status. I will continue to monitor that and put out a forecast if needed regarding any possible change. All interests in the Leeward Islands, Caribbean Islands, and Puerto Rico should monitor the progress of this system closely.

There is no engineering limit to the size of jet boats, though the validity of their use depends a lot on the type of application. Classic prop-drives are generally more efficient and economical at low speeds (up to about 20 knots) but as boat speed increases beyond this the extra hull resistance generated by struts, rudders, shafts etc means waterjets are more efficient in the 20-50 knot range. Also, in situations where you need very large propellers turning at slow speeds (such as tug boats) the equivalent size waterjet would be simply too big to be practical. For these reasons the vast majority of waterjet units are installed in high speed vessels and in particular situations where shallow draught, manoeuvrability and load flexibility are main concerns.

A catboat has a single mast mounted fairly forward and does not carry a head sail (jib etc.). Most modern designs have only one sail, the mainsail; however the traditional catboat could carry multiple sails from the gaff rig. We just got this message from a friend's wife. Her husband's EPIRB (Yacht NO KOMIS) went off and he dropped off the nets and e-mail. The local SAR does not seem to have many assets/capabilities. We don't know Indonesia very well, anyone have any suggestions as to any other actions she should take?

"Great to hear from you and get the photos. Life is stressful for me right now. Terry and his yacht "No Komis" are the subject of a search by Search & Rescue, Indonesia. The EPIRB went off last Saturday afternoon, transmitted for about 25 hours and stopped. There has been no Sailmail since Nov 28. Terry was leaving the next day for a brief overnight passage of 100nm. This could be a series of events, none serious, but then again, who knows. Any one thing is no problem, but putting them together does make you wonder what has happened. ......"

During racing, the controlled gybe manoeuver may be performed many times without the use of a boom preventer - this is understandable. The 92ft schooner Alvei left Port Vila in Vanuatu with nine people onboard more than three weeks ago. The Alvei is described as a learning vessel, which gives travelers the experience of sailing on a traditional ship. Its crew and passengers are believed to be aged between 27 and 66 and include Australians, Americans, a New Zealander and an Englishman.

We just got this message from a friend's wife. Her husband's EPIRB (Yacht NO KOMIS) went off and he dropped off the nets and e-mail. The local SAR does not seem to have many assets/capabilities. We don't know Indonesia very well, anyone have any suggestions as to any other actions she should take?

"Great to hear from you and get the photos. Life is stressful for me right now. Terry and his yacht "No Komis" are the subject of a search by Search & Rescue, Indonesia. The EPIRB went off last Saturday afternoon, transmitted for about 25 hours and stopped. There has been no Sailmail since Nov 28. Terry was leaving the next day for a brief overnight passage of 100nm. This could be a series of events, none serious, but then again, who knows. Any one thing is no problem, but putting them together does make you wonder what has happened. ......"

It�s good the internet spews out reliable information whenever they needed one. Buying a used boat is tricky business � you will not be buying just the boat, but also its ills. Here are 5 spots you should examine before you hand over your check:

Check the hours on the boat. Boats with more than 400 hours on them would already incur high maintenance cost.

Check the exterior - Look for signs of accidents like a scrape on the paint, or wood blisters. The hull should be hard with no sign of rot, and should not give off a hollow sound when you tap on it. Check on the propeller for any signs of cracks. Is it deformed? Can you see a scratch?

Check the interior - Is there radio equipment on the boat? You will need this for emergency, besides, marine law requires it. Are there life vests, too?

Check on the boat�s upholstery - You may incur additional cost on tear and wear � you would not like your boat to look shabby, would you?

The floor should have carried well and should not show any sign of rot. Presence of mildew on wall crevices, or on the floors indicates vulnerable spots for decay.

Check on maintenance - Is the warranty still up? What major repairs were done to the boat? How many maintenance checks does the boat get every year? Who does the repairs and maintenance? Where is the boat stored while it�s not at sea? Hire the services of a marine mechanic to check on the boat�s mechanical parts such as plugs, alternator, spark arrestors, engine alignment, hoses, and blower among others.

Find out when did the boat get its last oil change? The boat�s engine condition can be determined from the color of its oil.

Check on the appraised value - Invite an appraiser to look at the boat and appraise its current market value. This will give you a head start on negotiating for the final price. If the boat is priced so far down the current market value, it could mean only one thing: the owner just wants to be rid of it. Find out why. A test drive should be done with the boat. A marine mechanic should be on board to hear and examine all the noises that the boat makes. Unless it�s driven, hidden defects may not be observed at all.

In this case it would be worth contacting the mooring operator to find out when the best times are for using your boat. Half Tide is when the tide will be in at your mooring for about half the time of the full tide. All States Of Tide means that your boat will be afloat all of the time, moorings in these areas tend to be more expensive than the mud berths as you can use your boat at any time

Most modern jets are single stage while older waterjets may have as many as three stages. The tail section of the waterjet unit extends out through the transom of the hull above the waterline. Tropical Depression Four (TD 4 ) a storm in the Atlantic - this was designated late this morning. It's moving to the west, and I expect this motion to continue for the next 72 hours. I feel the NHC has a good track forecast right now, based on what I've seen in the forecast steering currents as mentioned this morning. This could change as this reaches T.S. or Hurricane status. I will continue to monitor that and put out a forecast if needed regarding any possible change. All interests in the Leeward Islands, Caribbean Islands, and Puerto Rico should monitor the progress of this system closely.

The story of boats is as old as the human civilization. There�s reference of a boat �Noah's ark� in the Bible. Noah's ark was the boat built by the Biblical character Noah to save his family and animals from the Flood. Gondolas were the traditionally used boats in Venice.

Today, a boat is considered as one of the major tools of watercraft. A boat is a small vessel for traveling on water. It comprises of one or more buoyancy structures called hulls, and some system of propulsion such as a screw, oars, paddles, a setting pole, a sail, paddlewheels or a water jet.

The front of a boat is called the bow or prow and the rear of the boat is called the stern. The right side is starboard and the left side is port. The boat toilet is called the �heads�.

A boat with a housing compartment is called a houseboat or barge. A pontoon boat is a flat-bottomed boat that serves as a dock or as a floating structure to support a bridge. The pontoon boat is also known as a party boat. It is constructed of round tubes (called sponsons) that are attached to the outside, bottom edge of a large flat deck. It has a safety railing that surrounds the deck from all sides. The helm station is placed either in the middle of the deck or off to one side. Hi, just a quick question - I've been looking for navigation software and found there is lots of it for sailing yachts. I came across a program called Software on Board that runs C Maps. So, I was just wondering if anyone has this and can tell me what it's like. Can anyone tell me what type of GPS antenna would be best (an internal or an external)? My boat is aluminium and I'm not sure how the signal would go through aluminium, and, is the accuracy of these units as good as each other?

Hello everyone! I am at a crossroads in my life and am excited for the next adventure. My plan is to purchase a sailboat with the proceeds from the sale of my business and live/cruise/relax/explore for 6 months of the year- every year! (if anyone has any recommendations for what I should buy - I'm all ears - I'm looking to spend around $200kusd and like the idea of a multi hull) I have limited sailing experience but am certified in advanced navigation standard and off shore cruising standard by CYA. Because of my limited on water experience I am looking for an experienced person to be the "captain" of the boat and teach me along the way! Hopefully the candidate will be easy to get a long with and will be able to stay with the boat long term. (I will need someone to sail/maintain her when I'm not there for 6 months of the year!) The crew will only be expected to contribute an equal share of the cost of food and drinks. All boat costs (fuel, fees, marinas, etc.,) will be covered by me!. Each person is to cover their own travel expenses to/from the boat and their costs of personal visas, etc.

Seattle To Hawaii And Guam - Sailing Crew Needed.

I need 2 or 3 sailing crew for Seattle to Hawaii and on to Guam. I will depart from Seattle/Port Angeles on or about 1 September and leave the boat in Guam. The boat is a 42 ft Cheoy Lee, well outfitted and solid. I am expecting to allow 2 months for the trip to Guam including 10 days port time in Hawaii for refitting and repair.
